Dua for a Merciful Outcome Amidst Sadness and Perceived Unworthiness

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3712

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree concerning me is ever effective. Your judgment concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to any of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn ammatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabiika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

Recite this dua when sadness weighs heavily on your heart, and you feel overwhelmed by your shortcomings, questioning your worthiness of Allah's immense mercy. It's particularly poignant when the vastness of the Qur'an feels like a source of comfort you desperately need.

How to Read

Begin with sincere intention and humility. Acknowledge your servitude to Allah and your dependence on Him, as described in the opening of the dua. Raise your hands, as is the practice when supplicating, and focus on the profound meaning of each phrase. Reflect on how the Qur'an, as a divine guide, can be a source of solace and healing for the heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication seeks Allah's help through His most beautiful names and His divine revelation, the Qur'an. It addresses the core issues of sadness, worry, and a feeling of unworthiness by requesting the Qur'an to be the means of spiritual renewal ('springtime'), enlightenment ('light'), and the alleviation of distress ('banisher' and 'remover'). It's a comprehensive request for emotional and spiritual healing, turning to the divine word when human strength feels insufficient.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'No person has been afflicted with anxiety or grief, and then said: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree concerning me is ever effective. Your judgment concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to any of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my worries,' except that Allah will take away his anxiety and grief and give him in their stead joy.' — Musnad Ahmad 3712 (Hasan)
