Dua for a Child Experiencing Sadness

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 1773, 1900

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever established. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself by, or revealed to anyone from Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept exclusively with You in the knowledge of the unseen that You possess, to make the Quran the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness, and the banisher of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abdunka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitábika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication can be recited for your child when you notice they are feeling down, withdrawn, or expressing sadness. It's particularly beneficial during times of stress, transition, or when facing difficulties. Recite it with sincerity and focus, directing your plea to Allah for your child's emotional well-being. You can also teach this dua to your child to recite themselves, adapting the pronounciation for their age.

How to Read

Recite this dua with heartfelt sincerity, focusing on the meaning and the need for Allah's help. It's recommended to face the Qiblah (direction of prayer) if possible, and to begin with praises of Allah and sending salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. While this specific dua is narrated in the context of personal supplication, when reciting it for a child, you can place your hand on their head or shoulder as you supplicate, conveying comfort and love. Ensure you are in a state of purity (Wudu) if possible, although it is not strictly required for supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua directly asks Allah to use the Quran as a means to alleviate sadness and worry. The Quran is described as the 'spring' for the heart, implying it brings life, growth, and renewal. It's the 'light' for the chest, illuminating the path and dispelling darkness. It's the 'remover' of sadness and the 'banisher' of worries, signifying a complete cure and relief. By asking through Allah's own beautiful names and attributes, we are employing a means that is most pleasing to Him, increasing the likelihood of acceptance. This dua emphasizes the profound spiritual connection between the Quran and emotional well-being.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Ibn Mas'ud said: The Prophet ﷺ said: “There is no one who is afflicted by anxiety or grief, and says (the above dua), but Allah will take away his anxiety and grief, and replace them with joy.” He was told: “O Messenger of Allah, should we learn these words?” He said: “Yes, indeed! It is recommended for everyone who hears them to learn them.”
