Dua for the Best of Both Worlds: Seeking Allah's Provision

Rizq & Provision
QuranAl-Baqarah 2:201

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

When to Read

This powerful dua can be recited at any time, but it is especially meaningful during the daily prayers (Salat) after the Tashahhud and before the Tasleem (the final salutations). It's a perfect supplication when reflecting on life's journey and seeking Allah's blessings for both this temporary dwelling and the eternal home.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt conviction, raising your hands in supplication as is customary for du'a. Focus on the meaning of each word: acknowledging Allah as our Lord, asking for goodness in our worldly affairs (health, wealth, knowledge, family) and in our Hereafter (forgiveness, Paradise, contentment), and seeking protection from the Hellfire. It is a concise yet comprehensive request to the One who controls all affairs.

Virtues & Benefits

This verse encapsulates the ultimate wisdom in seeking provision. It teaches us not to be solely focused on worldly gains, nor to neglect our eternal destiny. By asking for 'hasanah' (goodness) in both realms, we are asking for Allah's comprehensive blessings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself often recited this dua, demonstrating its immense value and the Prophet's ﷺ own balanced focus on dunya and akhirah. It encompasses all forms of good, both material and spiritual, and protection from all forms of evil.
