Dua for Sustenance to Fulfill Our Deen

Rizq & Provision
Hasan HadithJami' At-Tirmidhi 3563

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I may not need anyone but You.

Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.

When to Read

This powerful dua is especially beneficial to recite after Fajr prayer, as it's a time when blessings are sought for the day ahead. It's also fitting to make this supplication whenever you feel anxiety about provision, or when you are about to embark on a new endeavor that requires lawful means. Making it a habit, perhaps after every prayer, solidifies your reliance on Allah for all your needs, enabling you to focus on fulfilling your religious duties without the distraction of unlawful desires or worrying about insufficient means.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincere conviction, raising your hands slightly as is customary for supplication. Ensure your heart is present and focused on Allah, the One who controls all sustenance. Visualize your needs being met through lawful means, and feel the contentment that comes from His sufficiency. It's best recited when you are in a state of purity (wudu).

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the core of our worldly and religious needs. By asking Allah to suffice us with lawful sustenance, we protect ourselves from the temptations of haram, which can lead to spiritual and worldly ruin. Wealth obtained lawfully allows us to worship Allah without hindrance, pay our dues (like Zakat), support our families, and give charity – all acts that strengthen our deen. The second part, asking to be enriched by His bounty, means attaining a state of contentment and independence, so our hearts are only attached to Allah. This freedom from needing others allows for deeper devotion.

Source & Authentication

The hadith is narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that a poor indentured servant came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am unable to pay for my freedom. Help me.' He ﷺ said: 'Shall I not teach you words that you may say, and which, if you were to say them, would be the equivalent of all the gold you needed? Say: O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I may not need anyone but You.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3563). The narrator also mentioned that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had a debt, and he recited this dua and paid off his debt.
