Dua for Provision and Protection in Old Age

Rizq & Provision
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men, and from old age.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijali, wa minal-haram.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua can be recited at any time, but it holds particular significance when reflecting on one's future, during moments of worry, or when seeking Allah's protection from various life challenges. Many Muslims make this dua as part of their daily morning and evening remembrances, or during their prostrations (sujood) in prayer, asking for a dignified and blessed life free from hardship, especially in their later years.

How to Read

Recite this dua with a sincere heart, understanding the profound meaning behind each refuge you seek. As you pronounce 'wa minal-haram' (and from old age), reflect on the desire for a graceful old age that is free from dependency, weakness, and lack of provision. Embody the humility of seeking Allah's protection from conditions that can diminish one's quality of life and reliance on Him alone.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ frequently made this powerful and encompassing supplication, teaching us to seek Allah's protection from a wide array of spiritual, psychological, and physical afflictions. By seeking refuge 'from old age' (al-haram), we are asking Allah to protect us from the negative aspects often associated with it: physical and mental decline, dependency on others, and potential destitution. This implies a prayer for a dignified, self-sufficient, and graceful old age, where one is blessed with continued health, sound mind, and ample, lawful provision. It's a prayer for Allah to grant us a life where we remain active, free from being a burden, and continuously provided for until our appointed time.
