Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2711

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the reversal of the well-being You granted, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeasures You. And I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and the punishment of the grave. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of the trial of wealth, and the evil of the trial of poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have heard, and from the evil of what I have not heard. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my desires, and from the evil of my Shaytan and what I associate with Him (or my self-deception), and from the evil of all that is in my hands (i.e., possessions).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matika, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatika, wa fujaa'ati niqmatika, wa jamee'i sakhatika. Wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa 'adhabil-qabri, wa sharri fitnatil-ghina, wa sharri fitnatil-faqr. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma sami'tu, wa min sharri ma lam asma'. Wa a'udhu bika min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri nafsi, wa min sharri shaytani wa ishraki, wa min sharri jamee'i ma fi yadayya.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua can be recited at any time, but it's especially beneficial to make it a part of your daily supplications, particularly after the obligatory prayers. It serves as a powerful shield against the subtle dangers of excessive attachment to wealth and the potential trials that come with both affluence and poverty.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, reflecting on its meaning. Raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to do. Visualize yourself seeking Allah's protection from these specific evils. It's important to not just recite the words but to internalize the plea for Allah's safeguarding.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers broad protection, including safeguarding against the corrupting influence of wealth (greed, arrogance, heedlessness) and the trials of poverty (despair, desperation). By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge our weakness and dependence on Him, asking for His help to maintain contentment and avoid being enslaved by material possessions. It covers seeking refuge from various forms of evil, both seen and unseen, internal and external.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate, saying: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matika, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatika, wa fujaa'ati niqmatika, wa jamee'i sakhatika. Wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa 'adhabil-qabri. Wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ghina, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-faqr. Wa a'udhu bika min sharr ma sami'tu, wa min sharr ma sami'tu, wa min sharr ma lam asma'. Wa a'udhu bika min sharr qalbī, wa min sharr nafsī, wa min sharr shaytani wa ishraki, wa min sharr jamee'i ma fi yadayya. (Translation as above).
