Dua for Generosity and Seeking Allah's Help to Give

Rizq & Provision
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 735

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This dua is excellent to recite at any time, but particularly effective after the obligatory prayers (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha). It's a comprehensive supplication that encompasses spiritual, material, and practical aspects of life, including the ability and willingness to be generous. When seeking Allah's help to give, one should make it a habit to ask for a 'goodly provision' (rizqan tayyiban), which implies seeking provision that is lawful and brings blessings, allowing one to then share it.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Raise your hands as you would in other supplications, focusing on the meaning of the words. Reflect on the interconnectedness of knowledge, provision, and deeds; true generosity flows from a heart that seeks beneficial knowledge, earns lawful provision, and strives for acceptance of deeds. Asking for 'rizqan tayyiban' is also a request for the ability to use that provision in ways that please Allah, which includes generosity.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, seeks three crucial things: 1. **Beneficial Knowledge ('ilman nafi'an'):** Knowledge that guides us to what is right and helps us avoid what is wrong. This knowledge often inspires righteous actions, including generosity. 2. **Goodly Provision (rizqan tayyiban):** This covers all forms of sustenance, including wealth. Seeking 'tayyib' (goodly, pure, lawful) provision is essential, as it forms the basis for acceptable charity and ensures the blessings of wealth. It also implies a provision that enables one to be generous. 3. **Acceptable Deeds ('amalan mutaqabbalan'):** The ultimate goal is for our actions to be accepted by Allah. Generosity is a highly rewarded deed, and asking for acceptance encourages us to perform it correctly and sincerely. The Prophet ﷺ would often recite this dua in the morning, signifying the importance of starting the day with such comprehensive supplication.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say when he started his prayer: 'Subhanaakallahumma wa bihamdika, wa tabaarakasmuka, wa ta'aala jadduka, wa laa ilaaha ghayruk.' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You; blessed is Your name, and exalted is Your majesty; and there is no god but You.) And when he finished his prayer, he would say the same words, or any other words that Allah willed. And he taught us to say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.)
