O Allah, I ask You for the doing of Your good deeds, and the abandoning of Your evils, and the love of the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend for Your creation a trial, take me to Yourself without my being led into it. And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.
Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khayratik, wa tark munakaratik, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfir li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.
When to Read
This dua is comprehensive and can be recited at any time, particularly during the times when supplications are readily answered, such as after obligatory prayers, during the last third of the night, or on Fridays. It's especially relevant when you are actively seeking a spouse and wish for Allah to guide you to someone suitable and to make the finding of that spouse a source of provision and goodness in your life.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us. Ensure you understand the meaning of the words you are uttering, focusing your heart on Allah. It is also recommended to follow this dua with specific requests for a righteous spouse who will be a source of comfort and a means to attaining Allah's pleasure, and to also make dua for yourself to be a suitable spouse.
Virtues & Benefits
While this specific dua focuses on seeking Allah's love and the ability to do good, its inclusion in the context of seeking a spouse highlights the broader principle: the best provision, including a life partner, comes from asking Allah. By seeking Allah's love and the love of deeds that bring you closer to Him, you are essentially asking for Allah to bless your efforts in finding a spouse with righteousness and guidance, making that union a source of immense good (khayr) in your life, akin to any other form of provision (rizq). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, 'The best of provisions is that which is sufficient.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5669). Seeking a righteous spouse is a means to fulfilling half of one's deen, a significant provision for worldly and eternal well-being.
Source & Authentication
Al-Tirmidhi narrated from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The supplication of one of you is answered as long as he does not rush, saying: I supplicated but I was not answered.' He also narrated that the Prophet ﷺ used to say: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3489). And the dua provided in the main entry is a supplication for seeking Allah's love and guidance in all matters, including finding a spouse, as it encompasses doing good deeds and avoiding evil, which are essential qualities for both individuals in a marriage.
