Dua for the Fasting Person: Patience with Loved Ones

Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 792

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant during Ramadan, especially when fasting is making you feel more sensitive or irritable. Recite it in the morning after your Suhoor, or at any point during the day when you feel your patience waning with family members or friends. It's also a beautiful dua to make when breaking your fast, asking for acceptance of your efforts.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. Begin by seeking Allah's help and acknowledging His power. Raise your hands if possible, as is the sunnah when making dua. Understand that 'beneficial knowledge' isn't just academic, but also the wisdom to navigate relationships. 'Good provision' extends beyond wealth to include the blessings in our time and health. And 'acceptable deeds' encompasses the way we interact with others, especially during this blessed month.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific dua is a comprehensive request for acceptance of deeds, knowledge, and provision, its recitation during Ramadan highlights the importance of maintaining good character. Fasting is a spiritual discipline meant to increase our taqwa (consciousness of Allah) and refine our character. This includes our interactions with those closest to us. By asking for 'acceptable deeds,' we are essentially asking Allah to help us perform our fasting and worship in a way that is pleasing to Him, which naturally includes patience and kindness towards family and friends, even when we feel the strain of hunger and thirst. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'The believer who mixes with people and bears their annoyance with patience will have a greater reward than the believer who does not mix with people and is not annoyed by them.' (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith collection, chapter on Mischiefs, Book 78, Hadith 51).
