Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This dua is perfect for reciting at any time, but especially during Ramadan. Before breaking your fast, after Taraweeh prayers, or during the pre-dawn meal (Suhur) are excellent opportunities. The very act of fasting aims to train us to control desires, and this dua directly asks Allah for the strength to do so, making it exceptionally relevant during this month.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands as you would for any personal supplication. Imagine yourself asking a loving, powerful, and merciful King for the very qualities that will protect you. Focus on the meaning of each word: guidance to the right path, piety to fear Allah, chastity to guard your modesty and desires, and contentment with what Allah has provided.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua asks Allah for four vital spiritual and emotional resources. Guidance (Huda) keeps us on the straight path, preventing us from straying into temptation. Piety (Tuqa) instills the consciousness of Allah, making us mindful of His presence and our accountability. Chastity ('Afaf) helps us guard our desires and purity, which is crucial when fasting. Contentment (Ghina) frees us from the craving for more, making us grateful for what we have and less susceptible to covetous temptations. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this powerful supplication, showing us how to seek Allah's help in building inner strength against the very things that can undermine our fast.
