Dua for Seeking Allah's Refuge from the Evil Eye During Fasting

Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This powerful dua is especially relevant during Ramadan and the entire fasting period. The evil eye (al-ayn) is a reality, and during fasting, our bodies are weakened and our souls are striving to connect more deeply with Allah. This makes us potentially more vulnerable, but also more receptive to Allah's protection. We can recite this dua in the morning after Fajr prayer, before breaking our fast at Iftar, or anytime we feel a sense of unease or suspect we might be affected by envy or the evil eye. It's a shield that helps maintain our spiritual focus.

How to Read

Recite this dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening. It's recommended to also blow gently onto yourself after reciting it. The intention is key: you are actively seeking Allah's perfect and complete protection. Imagine His words as an impenetrable fortress surrounding you. Make sure to pronounce the Arabic clearly, reflecting on the meaning of seeking refuge in Allah's unmatched power and creation.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a direct way to invoke Allah's protection against all forms of created evil, including the very real harm that can come from the evil eye. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this as a comprehensive means of seeking refuge. By relying on Allah's perfect words, we acknowledge His ultimate power over all things. During fasting, this protection is vital to ensure our worship remains pure and unaffected by external malice, helping us to fully benefit from the spiritual cleansing of Ramadan.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever says this dua at night, a garment from Paradise will be sent down to him, and he will remain in the protection of Allah, and Satan will not approach him until morning.' (Sahih Muslim 2708). Another narration states: 'He (the Prophet ﷺ) used to seek refuge in Allah from the evil eye until the Surahs of seeking refuge (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) were revealed. When they were revealed, he started reciting them and abandoned everything else.' (Sunan An-Nasa'i 5486 - Hasan). While the specific wording 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' is mentioned in Sahih Muslim in the context of general seeking of refuge, it encapsulates the essence of seeking protection from created evils, which includes the evil eye.
