Dua for Protection from Overindulgence and Wastefulness After Breaking Fast

Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant after breaking the fast, as it's a moment of transition and potential overindulgence. It's also a general supplication that can be made at any time, especially at the start of the day or after any significant undertaking, asking for Allah's blessings in our actions and provisions.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart, focusing on the meaning of each word. Raise your hands in supplication as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though it's not strictly a condition for this specific supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a comprehensive request for blessings in three vital areas of a Muslim's life: 1. **Beneficial Knowledge ('Ilman Naafi'an):** Seeking knowledge that leads to understanding Allah, His commands, and guides us to what is right. 2. **Good Provision (Rizqan Tayyiban):** Asking for sustenance that is pure, lawful, and sufficient, which can be a means of worship and pleasing Allah. 3. **Acceptable Deeds ('Amalan Mutaqabbalan):** Praying that our efforts and acts of worship are accepted by Allah, which is the ultimate goal. This protects us from performing actions that are merely for show or not in accordance with Islamic teachings, thereby preventing wastefulness of effort. The overall sentiment guards against wasting Allah's blessings, whether it's time, resources, or spiritual opportunities, by asking for what is truly beneficial and accepted.
