Dua for Guidance in Balancing Fasting and Work

Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1522

اَللّٰهُمَّ أَعِنِّيْ عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ.

O Allah, help me to remember You, to give thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner.

Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatika.

When to Read

This powerful dua is excellent to recite any time, but it's particularly beneficial during Ramadan. As the demands of work continue alongside the spiritual obligations of fasting, we can feel stretched. Recite this dua in the morning before starting your workday, or at any point during the day when you feel overwhelmed, asking Allah to empower you to manage both your worldly duties and your worship effectively.

How to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that touches on remembering Allah (dhikr), being grateful to Him (shukr), and performing acts of worship perfectly (husni 'ibadah). When reciting, try to connect with each part: reflect on Allah's presence throughout your day, acknowledge His countless blessings that sustain you even while fasting, and intend to perform your work in a way that is pleasing to Him, as it's a means of providing for yourself and your family.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself to Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), is a cornerstone for seeking Allah's assistance in all aspects of life. By asking for help with remembrance, gratitude, and good worship, we are essentially asking for Allah's barakah (blessing) in our efforts. This can translate into increased focus at work, sustained energy despite fasting, and a deeper spiritual connection, making our fasts more meaningful and our work more productive and pleasing to Allah. It's a request for divine enablement to fulfill our responsibilities with excellence.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ held Mu'adh's hand and said, 'O Mu'adh, by Allah I love you, and I advise you, O Mu'adh, do not miss saying every morning and every evening: "O Allah, help me to remember You, to give thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner."' (Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatika).
