O Allah, increase me in mercy and kindness towards the needy and the poor, and grant me a tender heart towards them.
Allahumma zidni rahmataw wa 'atfan 'alal-muhtajeena wal-masakeeni, wahab li qalban layyinana lahum.
When to Read
This dua is particularly potent during Ramadan, especially in the latter half. Recite it during suhoor, after prayers, or during the blessed hours of the night. Consider saying it as you break your fast, remembering those who have little.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity, focusing on the meaning and the feeling of empathy it aims to cultivate. Imagine the struggles of those less fortunate. It's best to raise your hands in supplication, as is the practice when making dua. Even if you can't find the exact Arabic, making a sincere translation in your own words is also beneficial.
Virtues & Benefits
Fasting is meant to foster empathy. The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said: '...and it (fasting) is a protection, so when you are fasting keep away from sinful talk and do not behave foolishly, and if someone slights you or fights with you, say two words to him, 'I am fasting'. By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, the smell which comes from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the smell of musk. (He also said:) Allah says: '(The person who fasts) gives up his food, drink and desires for My sake. Fasting is for Me and I shall reward it for good deeds ten times over. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1894)'. Cultivating this empathy is a direct result of this spiritual discipline, drawing you closer to Allah's mercy.
