O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the loss of Your blessings, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Fire, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify me from my sins as a white garment is purified from dirt, and set me far from my sins as You have set far the East and the West.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matika, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatika, wa fuja'ati niqmatika, wa jami'i sakhatika, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatin-nari, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ghina, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dajjal. Allahummaghsil qalbi bimath-thala'i wal-baradi, wa naqqini min khata-ya kama yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa ba'id bayni wa bayna khata-ya kama ba'adta baynal-mashriqi wal-maghrib.
When to Read
This is a comprehensive supplication that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught to his companions and would himself recite regularly, especially after the Tashahhud in prayer. It is particularly relevant when one feels overwhelmed by the confusion of the times, the spread of unverified information, or the temptations that can lead one away from the truth. Reciting it after every obligatory prayer is a powerful habit to cultivate protection from various trials, including those that stem from ignorance and misinformation.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. It is ideally recited after the Tashahhud in prayer, just before the Tasleem (salutations). Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it, asking Allah (SWT) for His divine protection and guidance. Ensure your heart is present and you are truly seeking refuge in Him.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua offers a vast scope of seeking refuge in Allah from both spiritual and worldly trials. By seeking protection from the 'loss of blessings' and 'change of protection,' we are asking Allah to maintain His favor upon us. The mention of 'suddenness of punishment' and 'all of Your displeasure' is a plea for mercy and forbearance. Crucially, it addresses protection from the 'trial of the grave,' 'trial of the Fire,' and the 'trial of the Dajjal,' which are significant fears for every believer. Furthermore, seeking refuge from the 'trial of wealth' and 'trial of poverty' highlights a need for balance and contentment. The request to cleanse the heart and purify oneself from sins is a direct appeal for spiritual purity, essential in navigating a world rife with misinformation that can cloud judgment and lead one astray. The Prophet ﷺ taught this to safeguard against internal and external corruptions.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach his companions, in every prayer, to seek refuge with Allah from four things, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi Jahannam, wa 'adhabi al-qabr, wa fitnatil-mahya wal-maut, wa fitnatid-dajjal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Dajjal). Then he mentioned another version: 'And he would say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matika, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatika, wa fuja'ati niqmatika, wa jami'i sakhatika. Wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatin-nari, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ghina, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dajjal. Allahummaghsil qalbi bimath-thala'i wal-baradi, wa naqqini min khata-ya kama yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa ba'id bayni wa bayna khata-ya kama ba'adta baynal-mashriqi wal-maghrib.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the loss of Your blessings, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Fire, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify me from my sins as a white garment is purified from dirt, and set me far from my sins as You have set far the East and the West.)
