Seeking Allah's Protection from Inner Evils

Protection
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the fading of Your favors, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and overcome by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make. It's particularly beneficial to recite this after your obligatory prayers (Salah) as part of your remembrance of Allah (Dhikr) and your personal supplications. You can also turn to it anytime you feel a sense of unease, worry, or when facing challenges that might stir negative emotions within your heart.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt conviction. Imagine seeking refuge in Allah from these negative states, just as you would seek shelter from a storm. Raise your hands as you would in supplication and direct your plea to Allah alone. Reflect on the meanings of each phrase and understand what you are asking Allah to protect you from. Make it a habit to include it in your daily supplications.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly profound as it safeguards not just our external circumstances but our internal state. By seeking refuge from distress and sorrow, we are asking Allah to protect our hearts from the gloom that can stem from envy, hatred, and discontent. The Prophet ﷺ's inclusion of protection from helplessness and laziness is also key; a healthy heart is an active one, free from the inertia that negative feelings can cause. This supplication helps cultivate a resilient and positive mindset, vital for spiritual well-being and for maintaining good relationships with others, free from the corrosiveness of envy and ill will.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach them (his companions) to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of the prevailing circumstances and the evil of what the people would do, in the same way he used to teach them a Surah from the Quran. He would say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the prevailing circumstances, from the evil of what is in this year, from the evil of what is in it, from the evil of what has happened in it, and from the evil of what will happen in it. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of what has been created.' And he would say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the vanishing of Your blessings, and the change of Your protection, and the sudden vengeance, and all Your anger. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from helplessness and slowness, from cowardice and miserliness, and from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.)
