Prophetic Dua for Protection from the Evil of a Jealous Person's Gaze

Protection
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This powerful dua is excellent for general protection, especially when you feel uneasy or suspect that someone's envy or ill-intentioned gaze might be affecting you or your loved ones. It's particularly relevant when dealing with situations where jealousy might be present, such as receiving blessings, experiencing success, or when children are admired by others who might harbor envy.

How to Read

Recite this dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening. You can also recite it before entering a situation where you might be exposed to the evil eye or jealousy. Breathe into your hands and then wipe them over whatever you can reach of your body, starting with your head and face, then repeating this three times. This practice, mentioned in the fuller narration of this hadith (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082), adds a physical dimension to seeking Allah's protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a direct plea to Allah, seeking refuge in His 'perfect words' – referring to the Quran and His divine decree – from all creation's potential harm. It encapsulates a comprehensive request for protection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific dua as a shield against all manner of evils, including the subtle yet potent harm that can come from envious eyes. By reciting it diligently, we acknowledge Allah's supreme power and sovereignty, placing our trust in Him to safeguard us from any harm, seen or unseen, including the effects of jealousy.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'There is no plague that descends, nor is there any demon, nor is there any evil eye that descends, but it is taken hold of by our words.' (This refers to the dua: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.'). Sahih Muslim 2708. A fuller narration in Sunan Abi Dawud (5082) mentions reciting it three times in the morning and evening, and wiping oneself with the hands afterwards.
