When one of you sees a dream that he dislikes, he should spit to his left three times and seek refuge with Allah from Satan and from the evil of his dream three times, and then turn over from the side on which he was lying.
Idha ra'a ahadukum ru'yan yakrahuhā falyabthuq 'an yasārihi thalatha marārin wal-ya'adh billāhi minash-shaytāni wa min sharri ru'yāhu thalatha marārin wal-yatahawwal 'an jambihilladhī kāna 'alayhi
When to Read
This guidance is specifically for when you wake up from a bad dream or have a dream that causes distress. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us a practical and spiritual response to such experiences.
How to Read
Upon waking from a disturbing dream, turn to your left side (if you were sleeping on your right), spit lightly three times to your left (this is a physical action symbolizing rejection of the bad dream, not actual saliva), and then recite: *'A'udhu billahi minash-shaytan wa min sharri ru'ya'* (أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ رُؤْيَايَ - I seek refuge with Allah from Satan and from the evil of my dream) three times. Then, change the side you are sleeping on.
Virtues & Benefits
This practice offers immediate spiritual and psychological relief. By seeking refuge in Allah and physically altering your sleeping position, you are actively warding off the negative influence of Satan and the distress the dream may have caused. It transforms a potentially unsettling experience into an opportunity to strengthen your reliance on Allah.

Sahih Muslim 2272. Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A good dream comes from Allah, and a bad dream (or the matter causing it) is from Satan. When one of you sees something he dislikes, he should spit to his left three times and seek refuge with Allah from its evil, for it will not harm him."
