Prophetic Duas
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 2976

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to put a people to trial, take me to Yourself without putting me to trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfir li, wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fitnatan fi qawmin fa tawaffani ghaira maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribu ila hubbik.

When to Read

This powerful dua is exceptionally relevant for the youth, as it encapsulates a comprehensive plea for guidance, protection from trials, and the cultivation of love for Allah and righteous actions. It can be recited at any time, but is particularly beneficial during times of decision-making, when facing temptations, or when seeking Allah's pleasure and closeness. Making it a habit, especially after obligatory prayers, can significantly shape one's spiritual journey.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence of heart. Visualize Allah's mercy and power as you speak. Raise your hands as you would in any supplication. Focus on each request: the commitment to good, the avoidance of bad, compassion for the needy, seeking forgiveness, protection from trials, and ultimately, the love of Allah and His beloveds. Understand that the requests for Your love and the love of deeds that bring one closer to You are foundational for a life pleasing to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers immense benefits. It is a blueprint for a life devoted to Allah, covering key aspects of faith and practice. * **Guidance towards good deeds:** By asking to do good deeds, one is seeking Allah's help to be proactive in acts of worship and service. * **Protection from sin:** The request to abandon evil deeds is a shield against falling into prohibited acts. * **Cultivating compassion:** Loving the poor fosters empathy and social responsibility, qualities highly valued in Islam. * **Seeking forgiveness and mercy:** This is a constant need for every believer, acknowledging our shortcomings. * **Protection from Fitnah (trials):** The plea to be taken without being tested by trials is a deep request for divine protection during turbulent times. * **Attaining Allah's love:** The ultimate goal, the love of Allah, is sought through seeking His love, the love of those who love Him, and the love of actions that draw one nearer to Him. This is beautifully aligned with the Quranic verse: 'Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."' (Surah Al-Imran 3:31).

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda, wat-tuqa, wal-'afafa, wal-ghina.' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment). Then he mentioned another dua: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-muflihat al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfir li, wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fitnatan fi qawmin fa tawaffani ghaira maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribu ila hubbik.' (O Allah, I ask You for the deeds that are successful in bringing good, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to put a people to trial, take me to Yourself without putting me to trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.) Transmitted by Imam At-Tirmidhi in his Sunan, Book of Supplication, Hadith 2976. He stated that this hadith is Hasan Gharib. The specific wording used in the entry is the second part of the dua mentioned in this narration, as it directly addresses the core requests pertaining to good deeds, avoiding evil, compassion, and divine love, making it particularly relevant for a comprehensive supplication.
