Peace be upon you, O dwellers of this place, from among the believers and the Muslims. Indeed, we will join you soon, if Allah wills. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.
As-salamu 'alaykum ahlad-diyari minal mu'minina wal muslimin, wa inna in sha'allahu biraqi'un. As'alu Allaha lana wa lakumul 'afiyah.
When to Read
This supplication is recited when visiting a graveyard, whether it's a family burial site or a public cemetery. It's a moment to reflect on mortality and remember our departed loved ones. The Prophet ﷺ would teach this to his companions when they accompanied him to visit graves.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Stand or sit facing the graves, if possible, and direct your intention towards the deceased. It's a beautiful way to connect with them through prayer and remembrance of Allah. The tone should be respectful and contemplative, not performative.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it extends a respectful greeting to the deceased, acknowledging their presence in the realm of barzakh (intermediate life after death). Secondly, it reminds us of our own inevitable journey towards Allah, fostering Taqwa (God-consciousness) and a sense of responsibility in our actions. Thirdly, it's a sincere request for 'Afiyah (well-being), which encompasses protection from all forms of hardship, sin, and punishment, both in this life and the next, for both the living and the deceased. It cultivates empathy and a connection with the wider Muslim Ummah, living and departed.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Buraydah that he said: "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to teach them, when they went out to the graveyard, that one of them should say: 'As-salamu 'alaykum ahlad-diyari minal mu'minina wal muslimin, wa inna in sha'allahu biraqi'un. As'alu Allaha lana wa lakumul 'afiyah.' (Peace be upon you, O dwellers of this place, from among the believers and the Muslims. Indeed, we will join you soon, if Allah wills. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.)"
