O Allah, forgive [so-and-so], elevate his status among those who are guided, and leave [a good legacy] for his descendants who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and illuminate it for him.
Allahummaghfir li-fulan, warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyeen, wakhlafhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabireen, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu feehi
When to Read
This supplication is specifically for seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy for a deceased Muslim. It is most fitting to recite it immediately after a person has passed away, during the funeral prayer, or at any time one remembers the deceased and wishes to pray for them.
How to Read
When reciting this dua, personalize it by replacing 'fulan' (so-and-so) with the name of the deceased person. It is a profound act of love and mercy towards the departed, reflecting our Islamic duty to pray for our brothers and sisters in faith even after they have left this world. You can make this dua individually or as part of a group.
Virtues & Benefits
Praying for the deceased is a vital aspect of our faith, and the Prophet's ﷺ supplications offer us a beautiful template. By reciting this dua, we are asking Allah to grant the deceased His vast forgiveness, raise their rank in Paradise among the righteous, and leave behind a righteous lineage who will remember them. It also asks for comfort and light in the grave, a crucial stage between this life and the next. This act embodies the spirit of brotherhood and mercy within the Ummah.

It was narrated from Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over a bier and he heard him say: Allahumma 'ghfir lahu wa arhamhu, wa 'afihi wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi min adh-dhunubi kama yunaqqath-thawbu al-abyadu min ad-danasi, wa abdilhu daran khayran min darihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjatihi, wa adkhilhu al-jannata, wa a'idhhu min 'adhabi al-qabri, aw min 'adhabi an-nar. (He said): And he said: 'And elevate his status among those who are guided, and leave [a good legacy] for his descendants who remain.' It was narrated to me from Abu al-Khattab that he said: 'and forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds.' And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Make his grave spacious for him and illuminate it for him.'
