Prophetic Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 925

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the decline of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of character, deeds, and desires.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhitik, wa a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaqi wal a'mali wal ahwa'

When to Read

This powerful dua is for all times, but especially potent when one feels a flicker of self-importance, when facing temptation to boast, or when observing arrogance in others. It's a daily shield against a subtle but destructive trait that can alienate us from Allah and His creation.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and contemplation, raising your hands as is customary for supplication. Internalize the meaning of seeking Allah's protection from the very real dangers of losing His favors, becoming physically or spiritually ill, or incurring His displeasure. Reflect on how character, actions, and even desires can lead one astray, and plead with Allah to safeguard you from them.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the root of many sins and failures: arrogance. By seeking refuge from the reversal of blessings and well-being, we acknowledge our complete dependence on Allah. The specific mention of seeking protection from 'evil of character, deeds, and desires' is crucial, as these are the arenas where arrogance manifests. It is a comprehensive plea for Allah's preservation against internal and external corruptions that stem from a proud heart.

Source & Authentication

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge (in Allah) from four things, and he would say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the evil of the trial of wealth, and the evil of the trial of poverty.' He (Abu Hurairah) said: And he (The Prophet ﷺ) also used to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the decline of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from evil of the character, deeds, and desires.'
