Prophetic Duas
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1554

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the reversal of Your good health, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that You dislike. And I seek refuge in You from the tribulation of the scholars (who mislead) and from the misguidance of the guides.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuji'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ahbar, wa min dalalati-l-hudaah.

When to Read

This dua is particularly poignant in times when society is bombarded with conflicting messages, and it can be challenging to discern truth from falsehood. We can recite it daily as part of our morning and evening remembrance (adhkar), or specifically when feeling overwhelmed by differing opinions or facing a decision where guidance is crucial. It's a shield against falling prey to those who, intentionally or unintentionally, lead others astray.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction and a humble heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Raise your hands as you would during other supplications. It is best recited after the obligatory prayers or during the times when supplications are more readily answered, such as the last third of the night or between the Adhan and Iqamah.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encapsulates the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ deep concern for the spiritual well-being of his Ummah. By seeking refuge from 'fitnatil-ahbar' and 'dalalati-l-hudaah', we are asking Allah to protect us from being swayed by those who may appear knowledgeable but possess corrupted understanding or intentions. It serves as a safeguard against intellectual confusion and spiritual deviation, ensuring our path remains aligned with the true teachings of Islam.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuji'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri wa 'adhab al-qabr, wa fitnatin-nari wa 'adhaban-nar, wa min sharri fitnatil-ghinaa, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatis-sa'ati. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min dalati-l-hudaa, wa min sharril-aghenaa' wa adhalal-kadhdhab, wa min sharril-amri kullihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharrid-dajjal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your favors, the change of well-being, the sudden vengeance, and all that You dislike. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave and its punishment, from the trial of the Fire and its punishment, and from the evil of the trial of wealth. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the misguidance of the guides, from the evil of the rich and the misleading of the liars, and from the evil of all matters. I seek refuge in You from the evil of the Dajjal.)
