Prophetic Duas
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1885

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ طَاعُونًا، وَلَا تَجْعَلْهُ وَبَاءً

O Allah, make it a plague (that ends quickly or affects specific people), and do not make it an epidemic (spreading widely and uncontrollably).

Allahumma-j'alhu ta'unan, wa la taj'alhu waba'an

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant during times of widespread illness or disease outbreaks. It's a prayer to mitigate the severity and spread of afflictions, seeking Allah's protection. While not a daily dua for general use, it's a supplication to be remembered and made when facing such challenges, turning to Allah for relief and containment.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention of seeking Allah's mercy and protection. Focus on the meaning of the words, understanding that we are asking Allah to limit the scope and impact of diseases. It can be recited individually or collectively when a community faces such trials. Raise your hands in supplication as you make this prayer, just as the Prophet ﷺ did for other supplications.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua reflects the Prophet's ﷺ profound understanding of seeking Allah's help in mitigating hardships. By differentiating between 'ta'un' (plague, often localized or a specific affliction) and 'waba'' (epidemic, widespread devastation), the dua seeks a less catastrophic outcome. It teaches us to turn to Allah in times of crisis, asking for His divine intervention to lessen suffering and protect the wider community. It instills a sense of reliance on Allah (tawakkul) while still taking necessary precautions.
