Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach them this invocation in the same way he used to teach them a Surah of the Qur'an: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the Antichrist, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.' He said: 'And the wicked tongue.' He said: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from evil, and from the mischief of all evil creatures.' He said: 'O Allah, grant me the correct guidance, guard me against evil, and provide for me a lawful sustenance, and make me among the righteous.' He said: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the helplessness of the servant, the distress of the miserable, the evil of the decree, the severe tribulation, the evil of what is done, the evil of what is trodden, and the evil of the father (incurable disease).' He said: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the going astray or being led astray, from stumbling or causing others to stumble, from committing an injustice or being subjected to injustice, from causing ignorance or being subjected to ignorance.' And he used to supplicate: 'O Allah, open to me the openings of the knowledgeable.' (Allahumma-ftah 'alayya futuhal-'arifin).
