Prophetic Duas
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1550

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, from the evil of my sight, from the evil of my tongue, from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, especially after the obligatory prayers. It's particularly beneficial when reflecting on the purity of one's actions and intentions, and seeking protection against inner failings that can lead to hypocrisy.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a present heart. Raise your hands as you would for other supplications. Focus on each part of the dua, truly seeking Allah's protection from the potential evils within your senses, your speech, your heart, and your desires. It's a personal plea, so ensure you understand the meaning and feel its weight.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encompasses seeking refuge from the worst forms of internal corruption. Hypocrisy, known in Arabic as 'nifaq', is a deeply destructive trait that manifests outwardly but stems from inner states. By seeking refuge from the evil of one's senses (hearing and sight), tongue (speech), heart (intentions and thoughts), and desires (represented by 'maniyyi' which can refer to desires or that which is emitted), the Prophet ﷺ taught us a way to guard against the very roots of hypocrisy. A hypocrite's evil deeds are often hidden, making them insidious. This dua is a shield against becoming like them, safeguarding our inner selves and outward expressions.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of what was in his hearing, and from the evil of what was in his sight, and from the evil of what was in his tongue, and from the evil of what was in his heart, and from the evil of his desires (or semen).
