Prophetic Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1389

O Allah, I ask You for its (Makkah's) goodness, and the goodness of its people, and the goodness of whatever is within it. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of its people, and the evil of whatever is within it.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma fiha, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies a beautiful request for the best of a place and its inhabitants, while simultaneously seeking protection from any potential negativity or harm. It teaches us to approach new environments and circumstances with a balanced perspective, recognizing Allah's power over all things. By asking for the 'goodness' of the place and its people, we are essentially asking for Allah's mercy, peace, prosperity, and guidance to be present. The seeking of refuge from evil highlights our awareness of potential challenges and our reliance on Allah to shield us from them. It's a comprehensive supplication for well-being in any new setting.

Source & Authentication

Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah on the day of the Conquest (of Makkah) while he was riding his camel, and he had on his head a helmet, and when he took it off, a man came and picked it up. He (the Prophet ﷺ) called for him and asked: What have you done with it? He said: I wanted to take its *barakah* (blessing). He said: Verily, I did not order you to do so. Take it back. He then called for his camel and mounted it. He prayed two rak'ahs (units of prayer) in the mosque. Ibn 'Abbas said: 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did Allah's Messenger ﷺ offer prayers in the House (Ka'bah)? He said: Yes. It was during these two rak'ahs that he supplicated: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma fiha, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha' (O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, and the goodness of its people, and the goodness of whatever is within it. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of its people, and the evil of whatever is within it).
