Prophetic Duas
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 7390

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and distress, I seek refuge in You from incapacitation and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recommended to be recited after completing your obligatory prayers (Salat). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make this supplication, seeking Allah's protection from various forms of hardship, both internal and external. Making it a habit after your prayers ensures you are consistently seeking Allah's shelter throughout your day.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heart that truly believes in the power of Allah. Raise your hands in supplication as you normally would for dua after prayer, and focus on the meaning of each phrase, internalizing your need for Allah's protection. It's a beautiful practice to continue this seeking of refuge with Allah, even after the formal prayer has concluded.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking refuge in Allah from some of the most debilitating and distressing aspects of life. It protects us from the anxiety (hamm) and sorrow (hazan) that can weigh down the heart, the inability to act (ajz) and lethargy (kasal) that hinder progress, the fear (jubn) that paralyzes us and the miserliness (buhl) that deprives us and others, and ultimately, the crushing burden of debt and the oppression by others (qahr ar-rijal). By reciting it consistently, we place our trust in Allah to shield us from these trials.
