اللَّهُمَّ أَلِّفْ بَيْنَهُمَا، وَأَصْلِحْ ذَاتَ بَيْنِهِمَا، وَاهْدِهِمَا سُبُلَ السَّلَامِ

O Allah, unite them, mend that which is between them, and guide them to the paths of peace.

Allahumma allif baynahuma, wa aslih dhata baynihima, wahdihima subul as-salam

When to Read

This is a beautiful dua to recite when attending a wedding, for the couple whose marriage is about to take place, or even for a couple who are facing difficulties. You can make it a regular practice to supplicate for married couples, asking Allah to keep their unions strong and peaceful. Reciting it for your own spouse, or asking them to recite it for you, is also a wonderful way to invoke Allah's blessings upon your marriage.

How to Read

Make sincere intention to ask Allah for the well-being of the marriage. Recite the dua with focus and understanding of its meaning. Raising your hands is a customary gesture of dua, especially when asking for something significant like the harmony of a marriage. It is recommended to direct your supplication towards Allah alone, seeking His help and guidance.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to be recited for a newly married couple, is a direct plea to Allah for fostering love, resolving disputes, and establishing a peaceful foundation for their life together. By asking Allah to 'unite them' (allif baynahuma), we are seeking the creation of deep affection and compatibility. The request to 'mend that which is between them' (aslih dhata baynihima) is a powerful plea for reconciliation and the smoothing over of any potential disagreements or misunderstandings that may arise. Finally, 'guide them to the paths of peace' (wahdihima subul as-salam) is an invocation for them to be led towards ways of life that are tranquil, harmonious, and pleasing to Allah. This dua encapsulates the holistic well-being of a marital union, covering emotional connection, conflict resolution, and spiritual guidance.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that when it was said to the Prophet ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, may my parents be ransomed for you, we know how to greet each other and how to say 'salam' to each other, but what is it that we say?' He said: 'Say: Allahumma allif baynahuma, wa aslih dhata baynihima, wahdihima subul as-salam. (O Allah, unite them, and mend that which is between them, and guide them to the paths of peace.)'
