بَارَكَ اللهُ لَكَ فِي المَوْهُوبِ لَكَ، وَشَكَرَ الوَاهِبَ لَكَ، وَبَلَغَ أَشُدَّكَ، وَرَزَقَكَ بِرَّهُ
May Allah bless you in His gift to you, may you give thanks to the Giver, may he reach the maturity of adulthood, and may you be granted his righteousness.
Barakallahu laka fil mawhoobi laka, wa shakara al-wahiba laka, wa balagha ashuddaka, wa razaqaka birrahu.
When to Read
This beautiful supplication is made when a newborn child utters their first words, especially if those words are related to remembering Allah or His Messenger ﷺ. It's a general dua for a newborn, often said by parents or relatives upon hearing the child speak for the first time or to bless the child throughout their early years.
How to Read
This dua is typically recited by an elder or someone of knowledge and piety when they hear the newborn's first coherent words or when gifting the child. It's a direct prayer for the child's well-being, spiritual growth, and for the parents to experience the joy of their child's righteousness. The intention should be sincere, seeking Allah's blessings for the infant.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication encompasses profound blessings for the newborn and their family. It acknowledges Allah as the true Giver ('Al-Wahib'), encourages gratitude, and prays for the child to reach their full potential ('ashuddaka' - maturity) and to become a source of goodness and righteousness for their parents ('birrahu'). It's a holistic prayer for the child's life, encompassing worldly and spiritual well-being.
Source & Authentication
The narration that serves as the basis for this dua involves 'Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: 'A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'I have been blessed with a newborn son, what should I name him?' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Do not call your son 'Yasar' (Ease), 'Rabah' (Profit), 'Nafi' (Benefit), or 'Najih' (Success), rather call him Muhammad, Ahmad, Mahmud, Hamd, or similar names.' Then a man came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have been blessed with a newborn son.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'May Allah bless the gifted for you, may you give thanks to the Giver, and may he reach the maturity of his strength, and may you be granted his righteousness.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5103, graded Hasan by Darussalam). Although the context here is slightly different (general blessing for a newborn, not specifically for first utterance of Prophet's name), the prayer is universally applicable to any newborn and their parents, acknowledging the blessing of a child and seeking Allah's favor upon them.
