Dua for Resilience and Relief from Anxiety and Grief

Pregnancy & Newborn
Sahih HadithAl-Da'awat (Supplications) 6363

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from the burden of debts and from being overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dal'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.

When to Read

For a new mother navigating the profound changes and emotional challenges of the postpartum period, this dua offers immense solace and strength. The Prophet ﷺ taught this supplication to seek refuge from specific forms of distress that often mirror the experiences of postpartum depression: grief (hazan), anxiety (hamm), helplessness ('ajz), and lethargy (kasal). A mother (or her spouse/family members on her behalf, with her consent) can recite this dua frequently, especially during moments of overwhelming sadness, feelings of inadequacy, intense worry, or when facing exhaustion and a lack of motivation. It is a powerful way to turn to Allah for comfort, mental clarity, and renewed strength to face each day. It can be recited at any time of the day or night, particularly after Salah or during quiet moments of reflection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity, focusing on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. Understand that you are actively seeking refuge in Allah from these specific emotional and physical burdens. While the Prophet ﷺ did not specify a particular number of times for this dua, consistency is key. Make it a regular part of your daily remembrance (dhikr), trusting that Allah hears your supplications and will grant you ease and resilience. You can recite it out loud or silently in your heart, whatever feels most comforting.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet ﷺ, serves as a spiritual shield against many forms of internal and external distress. By invoking Allah's protection from *hamm* (anxiety about the future) and *hazan* (grief over the past), we address the very core of emotional suffering often experienced by new mothers. Seeking refuge from *'ajz* (helplessness) and *kasal* (lethargy) directly counters feelings of inadequacy and the immense fatigue that can accompany postpartum life. The dua is a testament to the Prophet's ﷺ profound wisdom in guiding us to seek holistic well-being, both physically and emotionally, by entrusting our deepest fears and struggles to Allah, finding resilience and hope in His immense power and mercy.

Dua for a Newborn's Healthy Eyesight and Vision

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the helplessness of old age. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and the punishment of the grave, and the trials of the Fire, and the punishment of the Fire, and the evil of the trials of wealth, and the evil of the trials of poverty, and the evil of the trials of the False Messiah (Dajjal). O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify me from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt, and keep me far from my sins as You have kept far the East and the West. O Allah, forgive me my mistake, and my ignorance, and my extravagance in my affairs, and whatever You know better of me. O Allah, forgive me my jesting and my seriousness, my mistake and my deliberate (sin), and all of that is with me. O Allah, forgive me what I have sent forth and what I have delayed, and what I have concealed and what I have done openly, and whatever You know better of me. You are the One Who sends forth and You are the One Who delays; there is none worthy of worship but You.
