Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 3371

I seek protection for you two with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every pestilence, and from every envious eye.

U'eezukuma bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammatin, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah.

When to Read

This dua is a beautiful supplication made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for his grandchildren, Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them). It is highly recommended for parents, grandparents, or any guardian to recite this dua upon a newborn baby, especially in the early days and weeks of their life, to invoke Allah's protection against any potential harm, illness, or the evil eye.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with the intention of seeking Allah's protection for the child. It is often recommended to place your hand on the child's forehead or chest while reciting. You can repeat it multiple times. Blowing gently onto the child after reciting is also a practice seen in some traditions, mirroring the Prophet's ﷺ actions in seeking protection for his family.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly invokes the perfect words of Allah, which are a complete and potent shield against all forms of harm. The mention of 'every devil and every pestilence' covers spiritual and physical ailments, while 'every envious eye' specifically addresses the potent danger of the evil eye ('ayn) which can afflict anyone, including newborns. By reciting this, we are following the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ and entrusting our child's well-being entirely to Allah, the Most Merciful and the Ultimate Protector.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn saying: 'I seek protection for you two with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every pestilence, and from every envious eye.' Then he would say: 'It was through this invocation that Ibrahim (Abraham) ﷺ sought refuge for his sons Isma'il and Ishaq.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371)

Dua for a Newborn's Healthy Eyesight and Vision

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the helplessness of old age. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and the punishment of the grave, and the trials of the Fire, and the punishment of the Fire, and the evil of the trials of wealth, and the evil of the trials of poverty, and the evil of the trials of the False Messiah (Dajjal). O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify me from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt, and keep me far from my sins as You have kept far the East and the West. O Allah, forgive me my mistake, and my ignorance, and my extravagance in my affairs, and whatever You know better of me. O Allah, forgive me my jesting and my seriousness, my mistake and my deliberate (sin), and all of that is with me. O Allah, forgive me what I have sent forth and what I have delayed, and what I have concealed and what I have done openly, and whatever You know better of me. You are the One Who sends forth and You are the One Who delays; there is none worthy of worship but You.
