I seek refuge for you with Allah's perfect words from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious eye.
U'eezuka bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hāmmatin, wa min kulli 'aynin lāmmah.
When to Read
This dua is specifically recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to be recited for a newborn. It's a beautiful way for parents or guardians to begin protecting their child from their very first moments, invoking Allah's care against unseen harms like the evil eye, devils, and harmful creatures. You can recite this when you first hold your newborn, or regularly as part of their daily protection, perhaps after Fajr and Maghrib prayers.
How to Read
Recite this dua clearly and with sincere intention, directing your plea to Allah. It is recommended to recite it three times, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ in seeking refuge. Gently blow (without saliva) onto the child after each recitation. This physical act, combined with the spoken words, helps to imbue the moment with a sense of spiritual and physical protection.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a powerful invocation for the protection of the newborn. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words, we are asking for His divine shield against physical ailments, the malevolent influence of Shaytan (Satan), and the harmful effects of the evil eye ('ayn). It’s a profound reminder that ultimate protection comes only from Allah, and this dua is a beautiful way to teach our children reliance on Him from birth.
