Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 3109

أُعِيذُكَ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ

I seek refuge for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every evil eye.

U'eezuka bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hāmmatin, wa min kulli 'aynin lāmmah.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited for a newborn immediately after birth, or as soon as possible. It's also a practice for parents to recite it for their children regularly, especially when they are young or feeling unwell, asking Allah to protect them from harm. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this for his grandsons, Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them).

How to Read

When reciting this for a newborn, it is recommended to place your hand on the child's head or body. Recite it with sincerity, focusing on Allah's protection. You can repeat it three times, blowing gently onto the child afterwards (without saliva). The intention is to invoke Allah's complete protection through His perfect words.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua invokes Allah's perfect and complete protection for the newborn. It shields them from unseen evils like the whispers of Shaytan and the harmful effects of the evil eye ('ayn), which are real spiritual and psychological ailments. By seeking refuge in Allah's words, we acknowledge His supreme power and sovereignty over all creation, trusting in His protection for our little ones as they embark on their journey in this world.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge in Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, saying: 'I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every animal that is poisonous and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Abraham (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah for Ishmael and Isaac (peace be upon them) with the like of this.'

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the helplessness of old age. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and the punishment of the grave, and the trials of the Fire, and the punishment of the Fire, and the evil of the trials of wealth, and the evil of the trials of poverty, and the evil of the trials of the False Messiah (Dajjal). O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify me from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt, and keep me far from my sins as You have kept far the East and the West. O Allah, forgive me my mistake, and my ignorance, and my extravagance in my affairs, and whatever You know better of me. O Allah, forgive me my jesting and my seriousness, my mistake and my deliberate (sin), and all of that is with me. O Allah, forgive me what I have sent forth and what I have delayed, and what I have concealed and what I have done openly, and whatever You know better of me. You are the One Who sends forth and You are the One Who delays; there is none worthy of worship but You.
