O Allah, teach him wisdom and eloquence of speech, and keep him away from lying and wickedness. Inspire him with his guidance, and protect him from the evil of his own soul.
Allahumma 'allimhu al-hikmata wa fis-hata al-lisani, wa jannibhu al-kidhba wal-fujura, wa alhimhu rushdahu, wa qihi sharra nafsihi.
When to Read
This dua can be recited by parents or guardians upon the birth of a child, or at any point during their upbringing. It's particularly fitting when making personal supplications (dua) for the child's well-being and moral uprightness, such as after Salah or during the blessed nights of Ramadan.
How to Read
This dua can be made with sincere intention and heartfelt supplication. You can raise your hands in dua as you would for any other supplication. It can be whispered softly, particularly when holding the newborn, or said aloud with gentle conviction.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking this dua for a child aims to equip them with the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. It is a prayer for their moral and intellectual development, asking Allah to grant them understanding, eloquence, and protection from negative influences and their own inclinations towards sin. This aligns with the Islamic emphasis on seeking beneficial knowledge ('ilm naafi') and protection from Allah for oneself and one's progeny.
