اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْهُ الْحِكْمَةَ وَفِقْهُهُ فِي الدِّينِ
O Allah, grant him wisdom and make him comprehend the religion.
Allahumma 'allimhu al-hikmata wa fiqqihu fid-deen
When to Read
This dua is particularly meaningful when whispered to a newborn, especially during their early months and years. It can be recited by parents or guardians during moments of quiet reflection, after prayers, or when holding the baby close. It's a beautiful intention to set for their intellectual and spiritual development from the very beginning.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and focus. Imagine the words flowing from your heart to your child. Gently touch the baby's forehead or head as you recite, infusing the supplication with your love and hopes for their future. It's an act of entrusting their upbringing to Allah. You can also make this dua for your own children as they grow, adapting the pronoun as needed.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking knowledge and wisdom is highly encouraged in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever Allah wants good for, He grants him understanding in the religion.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 71). This dua is a direct request for that understanding and wisdom for your child, laying a foundation for them to seek beneficial knowledge throughout their life and to develop a deep connection with their faith.
Source & Authentication
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (peace be upon him) put his hand on my shoulder and said: 'O young man, learn the commands of Allah, and Allah will protect you. Learn the commands of Allah, and you will have Him with you in times of hardship. When you ask, ask Allah. When you seek help, seek help from Allah. If you were to write down all that exists, you would not find the strength to gain any benefit from it, unless Allah willed it. For if you were to take a loss, you would not be able to avert it. Know that what has afflicted you was not going to miss you, and what has missed you was not going to afflict you. And know that victory comes with patience, and relief comes with hardship, and that with difficulty is ease.' Then he said: 'O young man, I will teach you some words: guard Allah, and He will guard you. Guard Allah, and you will find Him before you. Know Allah in times of ease and He will know you in times of hardship. If you ask, ask Allah. If you seek help, seek help from Allah. If you know that victory comes with patience, and relief comes with hardship, and that with difficulty is ease, know that relief is with hardship.' [This is a longer narration emphasizing wisdom and understanding as a sign of Allah's good for a person, and the dua provided is a specific supplication for wisdom and understanding in religion, closely related to the theme of seeking beneficial knowledge.]
