Old Age & Elderly
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1522

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

O Allah, help me to remember You, to give thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner.

Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik

When to Read

This dua is a powerful supplication that can be made at any time, but it's particularly beneficial for the elderly. As years pass, and the body may weaken, it's a constant reminder to keep our connection with Allah strong. Reciting it regularly, especially after prayers or during quiet moments of reflection, helps maintain focus on His blessings and strengthens our devotion.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a present heart. It's best to say it with your hands raised, as is the Sunnah when making dua. Imagine Allah's presence and the vastness of His favors upon you throughout your life, especially during your older years. Understanding the meaning of each phrase – seeking help to remember Him, thank Him, and worship Him beautifully – will deepen its impact.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his companion Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) as a constant reminder, covers the essence of our relationship with Allah. For the elderly, remembering Allah's favors, particularly when physical strength or cognitive abilities might be challenged, is a great source of solace and spiritual strength. Constant remembrance (dhikr) keeps the heart alive and connected to its Creator. Expressing gratitude (shukr) reminds us that all we have, from our very existence to the comforts of old age, is from Him alone. And striving for the best form of worship (husn 'ibadah) ensures our actions are focused on pleasing Him, regardless of our physical capacity.

Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took my hand and held it, then he said: 'O Mu'adh, by Allah I love you, so I advise you, O Mu'adh, do not miss saying every day after every prayer: O Allah, help me to remember You, and to give thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner.'
