Dua for Visitors and Connection for the Elderly

Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2697

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me well-being, and provide for me.

Allahumma-ghfir li, wa-rhamni, wa-hdini, wa-'afini, wa-rzuqni

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his uncle Al-'Abbas, is a powerful way to ask Allah for all-encompassing goodness. It's especially relevant for an elderly person feeling isolated, as it asks for forgiveness, mercy, guidance, well-being (physical and mental), and provision. Well-being includes having one's affairs set right, which can encompass having a fulfilling social life. Recite this with sincerity, perhaps after prayers, or at any time you wish to seek Allah's favor for yourself or an elder you care about. The essence of the dua is to ask for everything beneficial in this life and the next.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands if possible (as is the Sunnah in many supplications). Focus on the meaning of each part: seeking forgiveness for shortcomings, asking for Allah's boundless mercy, requesting guidance to the straight path, praying for good health and soundness of body and mind, and asking for provision that sustains you. For an elderly person, this can be a source of comfort and a way to connect with Allah, knowing that He hears every plea.

Virtues & Benefits

This specific phrase is part of a longer teaching by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding asking Allah for the best in this life and the hereafter. While this particular phrasing is a fundamental, comprehensive supplication, the broader principle of visiting and showing kindness to elders is highlighted in many texts. For instance, the Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of deeds is to visit the sick and to offer gifts to your Muslim brother." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6137). Visiting the elderly fulfills this principle. Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes kindness to parents and elders: "And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as] 'uff' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy on them even as they brought me up [when I was] small.'" (Al-Isra 17:23-24). By visiting and connecting with the elderly, we fulfill these commands, bring joy, alleviate loneliness, and earn immense reward from Allah.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to Al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "O 'Abbas, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, I shall grant you, I shall give you, I shall bestow upon you, I shall favor you with..." (and he mentioned ten things). He said: "Ask Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He, for the forgiveness of sins, well-being in this world and the Hereafter." Then he said: "O Allah, grant me the best in this world and the best in the Hereafter, and protect me from the torment of the Fire." Then he said: "O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me well-being, and provide for me." (Allahumma-ghfir li, wa-rhamni, wa-hdini, wa-'afini, wa-rzuqni). And the narrator said: "He (the Prophet ﷺ) said to him: 'He (meaning this du'a) has combined for you the goodness of this world and the Hereafter.'" (Sahih Muslim 2697).
