Dua for Protection Against the Ailments of Old Age

Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your blessings, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that which displeaches You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the arduousness of affliction, and the attainment of misery, and the evil of decree, and the rejoicing of enemies. O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all affairs, and determination in pursuing righteousness, and I ask You to enable me to be grateful for Your blessings, and to worship You well. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue, and I ask You for the good of that which You know, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of that which You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know. Verily, You are the Knower of the unseen.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min juhdil-bala'i, wa darakish-shaqa'i, wa su'il-qada'i, wa shamatatil-a'da'. Allahumma inni as'alukal-thabata fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisaanan sadiqan, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyub.

It is particularly relevant for those advancing in age, or for anyone wishing to seek Allah's protection from the general adversities and physical frailties that can accompany aging, such as declining health, loss of strength, and the onset of various ailments.

How to Read

Raise your hands in supplication, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when making dua. Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encompasses seeking refuge from the loss of divine blessings, the reversal of health and well-being, sudden divine punishment, and anything that incurs Allah's displeasure. It specifically asks for protection against hardship, misery, ill fate, and the gloating of enemies. By asking for steadfastness, determination in good deeds, gratitude, and excellent worship, the believer strengthens their connection with Allah, which is a source of inner peace and resilience, invaluable as one ages.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach his companions the following dua in the manner of teaching a Surah from the Qur'an: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your blessings, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that which displeaces You.' (Sahih Muslim 2721). The latter part of the dua ('Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min juhdil-bala'i...') is also narrated with similar phrasing and context, often taught by the Prophet ﷺ as a comprehensive supplication for protection against various forms of hardship and misfortune.
