Old Age & Elderly
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1509

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

O Allah, help me to remember You, to give thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner.

Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatika

When to Read

This beautiful dua is perfect for our elderly brothers and sisters, and indeed for all of us. It's especially poignant for those who may find reciting the Quran or engaging in dhikr more challenging due to age or physical limitations. Recite it after every prayer, or at any time of day when you feel the need for divine assistance in maintaining your connection with Allah through His remembrance and His Book.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands slightly as you implore Allah. Focus on the meaning of the words, truly asking for Allah's support in making His remembrance and His Book a source of ease and joy, rather than a burden. It is recommended to say it after the tasleem (final salutation) of the prayer, as this is a time when supplications are often accepted.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a comprehensive plea for divine assistance in the most vital aspects of our faith: remembering Allah (dhikr), being grateful to Him (shukr), and perfecting our worship (husn 'ibadah). For the elderly, who might face physical challenges that make these acts more difficult, this dua becomes an essential tool. It acknowledges our dependence on Allah and asks for His enablement, ensuring that their efforts in reciting Quran and doing dhikr are blessed and made easier, pleasing Allah even when physical exertion is limited. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companion Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) to recite after prayers, highlighting its importance and effectiveness.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (peace be upon him) took my hand and said, 'O Mu'adh, by Allah, I love you, and I tell you, 'O Allah, help me to remember You, to give thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner.' Mu'adh ibn Jabal said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, how should I say this? He said: Say it after you have completed the prayer.
