اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا
O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provisions, and acceptable deeds.
Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan
When to Read
This is a comprehensive dua that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite every morning after Fajr prayer. It's particularly relevant as we age because it encompasses seeking strength not just physically, but also mentally (beneficial knowledge), financially (good provisions), and spiritually (acceptable deeds). As our physical capabilities may wane, the strength derived from beneficial knowledge, lawful sustenance, and deeds accepted by Allah becomes even more crucial for a fulfilling life. You can make it a habit after Fajr, or recite it at any time you feel the need for Allah's support and blessings, especially when facing the challenges that come with advancing years.
How to Read
The Prophet ﷺ would say this dua with sincerity and focus. When reciting it, you should raise your hands slightly, beginning with 'Allahumma' (O Allah), and then clearly articulate each part of the request: 'ilman naafi'an' (beneficial knowledge), 'wa rizqan tayyiban' (good provisions), and 'wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan' (acceptable deeds). It's recommended to face the Qiblah and have a heart full of hope and trust in Allah's mercy and power to grant what is asked. Repeating it consistently, as the Prophet ﷺ did, strengthens its impact.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is incredibly powerful as it seeks three of the most essential elements for a blessed life, both in this world and the next. Beneficial knowledge guides us and protects us from misguidance. Good provisions ensure that our sustenance is pure and pleasing to Allah, which in turn purifies our bodies and our worship. Acceptable deeds are those performed according to the Sunnah and with sincere intention, which are the very purpose of our creation. As we age, focusing on these aspects ensures that our remaining years are spent in a state of pleasing Allah, gathering provisions for the Hereafter, and maintaining a connection with Him through knowledge and righteous actions.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say, 'O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, sustenance that is good and pure, and deeds that are acceptable.' (Reported by Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her)). Another narration from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: 'None of you should say: O Allah, forgive me if You wish; O Allah, have mercy on me if You wish; O Allah, provide for me if You wish. He should seek refuge from his own thoughts and decide his matters with resolve, for no one can compel Allah to do what He wishes.' Then he taught them to say: 'O Allah, I ask You for Your mercy... and he mentioned the rest of the hadith about seeking refuge from bad character, deeds and desires.' In a related narration from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): 'The Prophet ﷺ said to me: "My son, when you enter upon the morning prayer, say: O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provisions, and deeds that are accepted."'
