Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3846

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, and sustenance that is pure, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This dua can be recited at any time, but it's particularly beneficial to make it after Fajr prayer, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to do. For our elders, cultivating a sense of purpose and reliance on Allah through beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and accepted deeds can significantly contribute to a positive outlook, even when facing physical or social challenges.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands in supplication if possible. Focus on the meaning of each request: seeking knowledge that benefits the heart and mind, asking for lawful and good provisions, and praying for deeds that are pleasing to Allah and worthy of acceptance. For elders, this act of turning to Allah can be a source of immense comfort and strength.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encapsulates seeking three vital aspects of a balanced and fulfilling life: beneficial knowledge that guides one's actions, pure sustenance that nourishes the body and soul, and accepted deeds that bring one closer to Allah. For the elderly, these elements can foster contentment and reduce anxiety, helping them to maintain a positive outlook by focusing on what truly matters. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would recite this dua in the morning, seeking Allah's blessings for the day ahead. (Sahih Muslim 7:17, Sunan Ibn Majah 3846).

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When the morning begins, and the servant says: (Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan) - O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, and sustenance that is pure, and deeds that are accepted - then he will have fulfilled what is required of him for that day.'
