O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the heavy burden of debt and the domination of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.
When to Read
This powerful dua is recommended to be recited daily, particularly after each obligatory prayer. It's especially pertinent as we age, when life's challenges can feel amplified, and the need for Allah's protection against emotional and financial distress becomes even greater. Making it a habit ensures we are consistently seeking Allah's refuge.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Raise your hands slightly as you make the supplication, just as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to do when seeking refuge. Understand the meaning of each phrase you utter, contemplating Allah's power to shield you from these afflictions. Repeat it consistently after your prayers to make it a firm part of your routine.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a comprehensive shield against various forms of suffering that can weigh heavily on us, especially in old age. Seeking refuge from 'worry and grief' (al-hamm wal-hazan) helps maintain inner peace and contentment. Protection from 'helplessness and laziness' (al-'ajz wal-kasal) empowers us to remain active and engaged. Shielding ourselves from 'cowardice and stinginess' (al-jubn wal-buhl) fosters courage and generosity. Finally, refuge from 'the heavy burden of debt and the domination of men' (dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal) seeks relief from financial stress and societal pressures, all of which can be magnified in our later years.
