Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSunan Ibn Majah 257

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions, and accepted deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This dua is a powerful supplication that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly potent after the obligatory prayers (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha). It is an excellent habit for elders to integrate into their daily routine, seeking Allah's help to maintain mental sharpness for continued learning and remembrance of religious knowledge. Reciting it with sincerity upon waking or before embarking on any learning activity can also be immensely beneficial.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning. It is recommended to raise your hands, as is customary when making dua, and to face the Qiblah if possible. Begin with praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Utter the words clearly and with a hopeful heart, truly believing that Allah has the power to grant your request. Consistency is key; making this a regular practice will help embed its benefits.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, covers essential aspects of life. By asking for 'beneficial knowledge' ('ilman nafi'an'), we are specifically seeking understanding that not only increases our intellect but also guides us towards righteousness and good deeds. In old age, this is crucial for continuous spiritual growth and for retaining the ability to comprehend and act upon religious teachings. It helps keep the mind active and engaged, preventing cognitive decline and fostering a deeper connection with Allah. The other parts of the dua – 'pure provisions' and 'accepted deeds' – further complement this by ensuring that our physical and spiritual lives are in harmony, making our worship and actions truly pleasing to Allah.
