اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِ لِي غُلَامِي وَاجْعَلْهُ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ الصَّالِحِينَ
O Allah! Grant guidance to my grandson and make him among Your righteous servants.
Allahumma ihdi li ghulami waj'alhu min 'ibadikas-salihin
When to Read
This dua is particularly poignant for grandparents who observe their grandchildren growing up. It can be recited at any time, but especially during moments of reflection, after prayer, or when you feel a specific need to ask Allah for your grandchild's well-being and uprightness. It's a beautiful way to channel your concern into direct supplication.
How to Read
Recite this with sincerity and heartfelt intention. Focus on the meaning of the words, picturing your grandchild receiving Allah's guidance and becoming a righteous person. It's recommended to raise your hands slightly, as is customary during supplication, and to face the Qiblah if possible. Remember that sincere dua, even if not uttered aloud, is heard by Allah.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking guidance for our children and grandchildren is a noble act that reflects our love for them and our understanding of the importance of Iman (faith) and righteousness. By making this dua, you are actively participating in their spiritual development. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself made similar supplications for others. This dua embodies the hope that our descendants will continue in the path of Islam and become assets to the Ummah, fulfilling the Messenger's ﷺ saying: 'When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three things: a continuous charity, knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who supplicates for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631).
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three things: a continuous charity, knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who supplicates for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). Although this specific dua is narrated as 'ghulami' (my grandson/boy), the principle applies to any grandchild. Another narration attributed to the Prophet ﷺ is: 'O Allah, guide him and make him a guide for others and make him a means of victory for the religion.' (Tirmidhi 3757, Sahih Lighairihi). The essence of seeking guidance for our progeny is a consistent theme.
