Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5675

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove this suffering, heal (him/her), You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.

Allahumma Rabb an-nas, adh-hib il-ba's, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifaa'a illa shifaa'uka, shifaa'an la yughadiru saqaman.

When to Read

This profound supplication is ideal for reciting when experiencing physical ailments, pain, or weakness, especially as one enters the stage of old age. It's particularly poignant when dealing with chronic pain or discomfort. Make it a habit to recite it for yourself or for elderly loved ones whenever they are unwell.

How to Read

Place your hand on the part of the body that pains you. Recite this dua with sincerity, focusing on Allah's power to heal. It's recommended to repeat it seven times, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Maintain a state of purity (wudu) if possible, and face the Qiblah while making dua, though these are not strict conditions for acceptance.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly calls upon Allah, the Lord of all people, acknowledging His absolute power over suffering and healing. It embodies the essence of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) by seeking His unique and perfect healing. The repetition of seven times signifies the earnestness and thoroughness of the supplication, aiming for complete recovery without any lingering illness.

Source & Authentication

The narration in Sahih al-Bukhari (Book 70, Hadith 5675) states: Hisham bin Urwah narrated from 'Urwah, from 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when a person complained to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about pain in his body, he ﷺ would say: 'Put your hand on the part of your body where you feel pain and say: Allahumma Rabb an-nas, adh-hib il-ba's, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifaa'a illa shifaa'uka, shifaa'an la yughadiru saqaman.' (O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove this suffering, heal him, You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.) [Hisham said]: 'So I told my son: You should memorize this dua and teach it to the person who comes to you complaining of pain.'
