Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 113

"O Allah, my desire is for You, and my need is humble before You. My strength has been exhausted by Your decree. So I do not conceal falsehood, nor hide the truth, nor deny blessings, nor associate anything with You. I ask You for tranquility, and I ask You for contentment after Your decree. I ask You for blessings in my life after its passing, and I ask You for closeness to You. I ask You to grant me safety and to grant safety from me [to others]. I ask You for steadfastness of the heart upon the truth, and I ask You for contentment with what You have decreed. I ask You for the glance towards Your Face, and I ask You for the longing to meet You, without causing harm or misguidance, or being led astray or leading others astray. And make me a guide, rightly guided."

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial during the challenging phases of old age when one might feel more vulnerable or reflective about their life and destiny. It's perfect for those moments of quiet contemplation, after prayers, or when seeking inner peace and acceptance.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a humble heart. Raise your hands in supplication as you would during prayer. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, visualizing your submission to Allah's will and your hope for His mercy. It is recommended to face the Qiblah if possible.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies a profound level of submission (Islam) and contentment (Rida). By asking for 'contentment after the decree,' one seeks the highest spiritual station of accepting Allah's plan, even when it's difficult. It also encompasses seeking inner peace (Sakīnah), steadfastness, and the ultimate reward of seeing Allah's Face and longing for Him. This holistic supplication aims to secure a blessed end to life and a positive outcome in the Hereafter.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from `Abdullah bin Mas'ud that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment).' And he would seek refuge in Allah from the evil of [what is in] himself. And he would say: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda was-sadadi (O Allah, I ask You for guidance and steadfastness).' And he would seek refuge in Allah from the evil of [what is in] himself. And he would say: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-bushra fi hayati wa ba'da mawti (O Allah, I ask You for good news in my life and after my death).' And he would seek refuge in Allah from the evil of [what is in] himself. And he would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka raghbatan ilayka, wa hajati ilayka, wa qudrati anfadhtha, fala aktumu al-batila, wa la asturu al-haqqa, wa la ajhadu al-ni'mata, wa la usyriku bika shay'an, as'aluk al-sakīnata, wa as'aluk al-ridha ba'da al-qada'i, wa as'aluk barakat al-'umri ba'da fana'ihi, wa as'aluk al-qurba minka, wa as'aluk an tuslimani, wa an tuslima minni, wa as'aluk thabat al-qalbi 'ala al-haqqi, wa as'aluk al-ridha bima qadayta, wa as'aluk al-nadhar ila wajhik, wa as'aluk al-shawqa ila liqa'ik, ghayra darrin wa la mudallin, wa la muftatin, wa la mudillin, wa an taj'alani hadiyan mahdiyyan.' (O Allah, my desire is for You, and my need is humble before You. And make me a guide, rightly guided.) So he said: 'The Prophet (ﷺ) taught me ten phrases to say every morning and evening.'
