اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ
O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You in the best way.
Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatika
When to Read
This is a profound supplication that can be made at any time, but it's particularly beneficial for our elderly loved ones. After the obligatory prayers, when the mind is often most receptive, is an excellent time to make this dua. It's also perfect for those moments when they might feel their memory or ability to focus is waning, asking Allah to make the act of remembering Him easier.
How to Read
This dua is best recited with sincere intention and a heartfelt plea. It’s simple enough to memorize and repeat frequently. Encourage them to say it with focus, picturing Allah's grace and their desire to connect with Him. The Prophet ﷺ taught this to his companions, so reciting it with the understanding that it's a Sunnah practice adds to its beauty.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is comprehensive. It doesn't just ask for help with Dhikr (remembrance of Allah), but also Shukr (gratitude) and Husn al-'Ibadah (worshipping Allah in the best manner). For the elderly, whose physical abilities might be diminishing, the ability to easily remember Allah and express gratitude is a immense blessing. It helps maintain that vital connection to their Creator, which is a source of peace and contentment. The Prophet ﷺ himself would often say this after salah, indicating its importance in his daily spiritual life.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ heard a man supplicating after the prayer saying: 'O Allah, forgive me my sins, my house be spacious for me, and my life be prolonged.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'What is this man saying?' They said: 'He is supplicating for such and such.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'I wish he would say...' and he mentioned this dua: 'O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You in the best way.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 1522, graded Sahih by Al-Albani)
