اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy upon me, guide me, grant me well-being, and provide for me.

Allahumma-ghfir li, wa-rhamni, wa-hdini, wa-'afini, wa-rzukni

When to Read

This comprehensive dua, seeking forgiveness, mercy, guidance, well-being, and provision, is incredibly potent for any situation. For safeguarding a marriage from materialistic temptations, recite it regularly, especially after your obligatory prayers (Salat). You can also make it a habit to say it together with your spouse, fostering a shared reliance on Allah against worldly distractions that can strain your relationship.

How to Read

Raise your hands as you would during supplication in prayer, starting with Bismillah (in the name of Allah). Speak with sincerity and conviction, truly believing that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate provider and protector. Focus on the meaning of each request, visualizing your marriage thriving on spiritual values rather than material pursuits. Maintain a state of purity and face the Qiblah if possible, though sincerity is paramount. After reciting, wipe your hands over your face as an act of seeking blessings.

Virtues & Benefits

This particular collection of requests is known as the 'Prophet's comprehensive supplication.' While not exclusively for marriage, its breadth covers essential needs that indirectly shield a marriage. Seeking Allah's forgiveness (ghufr) cleanses the heart, reducing greed and dissatisfaction. Asking for mercy (rahmah) softens hearts towards each other and Allah, fostering empathy. Guidance (hidayah) steers the couple towards righteous paths and away from misguidance, including the allure of excessive materialism. Well-being ('afiyah) encompasses both physical and spiritual health, crucial for a strong partnership. Finally, seeking lawful provision (rizq) ensures that the couple is sustained in a way that pleases Allah, preventing them from resorting to ill-gotten gains or becoming overly fixated on wealth acquisition. By turning to Allah for all these fundamental needs, a couple builds a foundation that is resilient against the corrosive effects of materialism.

Anta-l-Muqaddimu wa anta-l-Mu'akhkhiru la ilaha illa anta.' (Meaning: O Allah, forgive me for what I have done in the past and what I will do in the future, what I have concealed and what I have done openly, what I have exceeded in, and what You know better than I. You are the One Who brings forth and the One Who delays. There is no god but You.) And in another narration: 'Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatika.' (Meaning: O Allah, help me to remember You, to give thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner.) And in another narration: 'Allahumma-ghfir li, wa-rhamni, wa-hdini, wa-'afini, wa-rzukni.' (Meaning: O Allah, forgive me, have mercy upon me, guide me, grant me well-being, and provide for me.)
