Dua for Safeguarding Marriage from External Harm

Marriage & Wedding
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3868

In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing can cause harm on earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Bismillahilladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i, wa Huwas-Sami'ul-'Aleem.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is ideal for reciting when you feel a sense of unease, or when you hear about or suspect external negative influences targeting your marriage. It's a beautiful habit to make it a part of your daily remembrance, especially after your obligatory prayers, to maintain a constant shield of divine protection. You can also recite it together with your spouse, holding hands, to strengthen your bond and seek Allah's protection as a unit.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction, believing in Allah's power to protect. Utter the words clearly, focusing on their meaning: acknowledging Allah's name as the ultimate safeguard against all forms of harm, seen and unseen. It's recommended to raise your hands in supplication as you say it. Some scholars suggest reciting it three times in the morning and three times in the evening for comprehensive daily protection, as mentioned in other related narrations concerning general protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the essence of seeking Allah's sole protection. By invoking Allah's name (Bismillah) and affirming that nothing can cause harm when His name is invoked, we acknowledge His absolute power over all creation. The mention of His attributes 'As-Sami' (The All-Hearing) and 'Al-'Aleem' (The All-Knowing) assures us that our plea is heard and that Allah is fully aware of any subtle or overt attempts to harm our marriage. Its virtue lies in redirecting our reliance entirely to the Creator, fostering peace of mind and strengthening the marital bond through shared faith and protection.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Aban bin Uthman, who said: 'I heard Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) say, when he was interviewed on the day he was besieged: 'I testify that I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say: 'He who says, 'In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing can cause harm on earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing' three times, will not be afflicted by sudden calamity until the morning comes, and whoever says it in the morning three times will not be afflicted by sudden calamity until the evening comes.'' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3868, also found in Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3388, graded Hasan Sahih by some scholars). While this hadith specifically mentions protection from sudden calamity, its wording is general enough to encompass all forms of harm when recited with the intention of protecting one's marriage from external evil.
